Iran considering banning filthy bloggers from meatspace

with one comment

Straight from Ars Technica: “Blogging about the wrong topics in Iran won’t just get you censored; it could get you killed. Iran’s parliament voted last week to discuss a draft bill that would “toughen punishment” for a number of crimes that it believes to be detrimental to society by making them subject to the death penalty. This list already includes crimes like armed robbery, rape, and leaving the religion of Islam (apostasy), but running a blog or website that promotes corruption, prostitution, or apostasy may soon be added.

Citizens found guilty of these crimes “should be punished as mohareb (enemy of God) and ‘corrupt on the earth,’” according to the text of the bill seen by the AFP, which lays out a spectrum of punishments ranging from exile and amputation (the theory apparently being that it’s hard to post without hands) to hanging. The bill also has stipulations that say it cannot be suspended or changed in the future.”

NFL to review tape for evidence of on-field gang signs

without comments

Straight from ESPN: “The NFL has hired experts to study game footage to determine whether players are displaying street-gang hand signals as part of their on-field celebrations, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“There have been some suspected things we’ve seen,” said Milt Ahlerich, the league’s vice president of security, according to the Times’ report. “When we see it, we quietly jump on it immediately, directly with the team and the player or employee involved to cease and desist. Period.”

Gang signs in pro sports gained a higher profile during the NBA playoffs, when Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce was fined $25,000 for making “menacing gestures” toward the Atlanta Hawks‘ bench during a game.

“We were always suspicious that [gang-related hand signals] might be happening,” said Mike Pereira, the NFL’s vice president of officiating, according to the report. “But the Paul Pierce thing is what brought it to light. When he was fined … that’s when we said we need to take a look at it and see if we need to be aware of it.”

Ahlerich said he does not believe the problem is widespread, but added that the league has spoken to some players — whom he declined to identify — about their use of hand signals, according to the report.

First-year players were counseled on gangs at the league’s recent rookie symposium, and a video on the dangers of gangs was required viewing for every player in the NFL last year, according to the report.”

Pathologists Believe They Have Pinpointed Achilles Heel Of HIV

without comments

Straight from Science Daily: “Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) researchers at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston believe they have uncovered the Achilles heel in the armor of the virus that continues to kill millions.

The weak spot is hidden in the HIV envelope protein gp120. This protein is essential for HIV attachment to host cells, which initiate infection and eventually lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS. Normally the body’s immune defenses can ward off viruses by making proteins called antibodies that bind the virus. However, HIV is a constantly changing and mutating virus, and the antibodies produced after infection do not control disease progression to AIDS. For the same reason, no HIV preventative vaccine that stimulates production of protective antibodies is available.”
