Aurora in the Distance

Straight from Astronomy Picture of the Day: “Explanation: Some auroras can only be seen with a camera. They are called sub-visual and are too faint to be seen with the unaided eye. The reason is that the human eye only accumulates light for a fraction of a second at a time, while a camera shutter can be left open indefinitely. When photographing an already picturesque scene above Juneau, Alaska, USA, a camera caught green sub-visual aurora near the horizon. Auroras are sparked by energetic particles from the Sun impacting the magnetic environment around the Earth. Resultant energetic particles such as electrons and protons rain down near the Earth’s poles and impact the air. The impacted air molecules temporarily lose electrons, and when oxygen molecules among them reacquire these electrons, they emit green light. Auroras are known to have many shapes and colors.”

  1. Kick ass pic dude.

    One more question for ya:

Are the Wii games on-line worth the money and bother to get the Wii connected to the Internet? I’ve heard they have games from all the previous Nintendo systems and a few from the Genesis. Could be cool but it could be suck too. What do you think of it?

  2. I think it would be worth it for you to get your Wii connected. I have purchased Pac-man and Elevator Action from the Wii store, and played both quite a bit. I think they were $5 each. You connect, sign up for an account, and just use your credit card to purchase. Really simple.

I’d suggest you go and get a cheap wireless router and try it out. You can get a refurb one like this:

for $22.95. I’ve purchased stuff from those guys in the past, so you can trust them.

Nintendo is constantly adding stuff to the online catalog, so you’ll definitely find games you’ll remember and enjoy. Once you’re online, you can also use the News Channel to “read the paper” on your TV. The Weather Channel is also pretty cool. Go for it.

  3. Thanks for this info Jason. I’ll certainly try it when I get a chance.

I was looking around the other day and I think I saw where they ported the old Gensis fighter game Eternal Champions. Remember that one? It was pretty cool but the thing I loved most about it was the “Highlight Replays” at the end of the fight where the computer would auto replay certain punches/kicks based on the damage they did. I’m surprised that that particular feature wasn’t copied on other games because it was so cool to rag on your oppenent.

Hopefully they’ll port Mutant League Football over soon. Another game that would be cool would be the old NHL 92/93. Ryan and I killed hours upon hours with that game.

Any games you hope they port over? I can’t seem to recall to many others, though I know that they’re there.

  4. Yeah, Eternal Champions was just released, and it was an excellent fighter back in the day.

As for others to port… Mutant League Football would be awesome, so would Herzog Zwei, Cyberball and Toejam and Earl. I would also like to see Nights: Into Dreams from the Sega Saturn. Supposedly a Nights sequel is coming out for the Wii, but I’d love to see the original available as well.

There are an absolute TON of games that were awesome for the Genesis, so the selection is nearly limitless…

You can actually get that old NHL game as a standalone controller that plugs into your TV for about $15 at Walmart, go check it out.
