720p PS3 games downscale on older HD sets

with 4 comments

Straight from Joystiq: “If you have a 1080i-capable television (that would be many older HD sets), you may be dismayed to learn that 720p PS3 titles will not upscale to fit the resolution. Instead, 720p titles will always be downsized to 480i or 480p. IGN confirmed this after testing four games — Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon — on a 1080i set that did not support 720p; all scaled down to 480p.

Take it as you will, whether you prefer 1080i or 480p. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 currently upscales 720p to 1080i if necessary (i.e. 720p is not supported).”

USB cable not included with retail (PS3) SIXAXIS

without comments

Straight from PS3Land: “In a surprising move, Sony has opted not to include a USB cable with their retail SIXAXIS controllers. A USB cable is required to charge the controller’s integrated battery, otherwise, the controller is rendered useless.

The retail PlayStation 3 contains a USB cable in the package, so at least consumers will have one included cable to charge controllers. However, if consumers wish to charge multiple controllers, after market cables appear to be the only solution.”

First off, I don’t agree with the “surprising move” intro to this story, since Sony has been doing its best to screw over consumers for several years now. However, would it have really killed them to throw in a USB cable, that would likely cost Sony less than 25 cents, with the controller they are going to charge $50 for? Or are they planning on selling their own brand of Sony PS3 SIXAXIS controller charging USB cables for this thing to steal even more money from unsuspecting consumers? Would you put it past them?
