Israeli warplanes kill U.N. peacekeepers

with one comment

Straight from the Seattle Times: “JERUSALEM — Israeli warplanes bombarded a U.N. post in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, killing three peacekeepers and leaving another feared dead in a strike that Secretary-General Kofi Annan termed “apparently deliberate.”

…Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today expressed “deep regret” over the killings and said the peacekeepers were killed mistakenly. He spoke on the phone with Annan, expressing dismay over Annan’s accusation and promising a thorough investigation, according to Olmert’s office….

…”Israel is determined to carry on the fight against Hezbollah,” Olmert said. “We will stop them. We will not hesitate to take the most severe measures against those who are aiming thousands of missiles against innocent civilians for one purpose — to kill them.”

Mahmoud Komati, deputy chief of Hezbollah’s political arm, told The Associated Press the guerrillas had not expected Israel to react with an all-out offensive after Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a July 12 cross-border raid, the first acknowledgment by the group that it had miscalculated the consequences of the raid two weeks ago.

“The truth is — let me say this clearly — we didn’t even expect [this] response … that [Israel] would exploit this operation for this big war against us,” said Komati.”

Straight from CBC News: “Sheik Hassan Nasrallah vowed Wednesday that Hezbollah would begin firing rockets that can strike deeper into Israel, while maintaining his forces would not lose a ground war.”I declare that we will enter the ‘beyond Haifa’ stage,” Nasrallah said in a speech on Hezbollah’s al-Manar television early Wednesday. The broadcast was also carried by Lebanese television stations and Arab satellite channels. “In the new stage, our attacks will not remain limited to Haifa.”"

WGA and Activation Failures Don’t Faze Redmond

without comments

Straight from Infoworld: “A case in point is that of a reader who has been wrestling with Microsoft and Dell over multiple computers that have come down with WGA/activation sickness. “I’m with a small firm that purchased 15 Dell Optiplex 160Ls on a single order a couple of years ago,” the reader wrote. “They came preinstalled with Windows XP on them. Now, all of a sudden, Microsoft is saying that their licenses are invalid. And – to make things more exciting – they’ve dimmed the Automatic Updates settings so we can’t change them to Manual. One by one, all of the machines are becoming unusable.”"

I have been unable to confirm whether or not Microsoft truly is locking out the automatic update settings so they cannot be changed; however, why take the chance? My suggestion is that if you are running Windows XP, then do yourself a favor and turn off automatic updates now; then make your way over to your friendly neighborhood Autopatcher site and update monthly.

If however, you aren’t interested in the Autopatcher bandaid, then I strongly suggest you head over to Ubuntu and banish Microsoft from your machine forever.
